The
53rd
General
Assembly
of
the
International
Federation
of
Medical
Students'
Associations
(IFMSA)
hosted
by
the
Macedonian
Medical
Students'
Association
was
opened
late
Tuesday
in
Ohrid.
Aleksandar
Ancevski,
Dean
of
SS.
Cyril
and
Methodius
University
in
Skopje,
addressed
the
700
delegates
from
82
countries.
"I
am
deeply
convinced
that
this
General
Assembly
will
fulfil
its
main
aim
-
to
create
a
network
of
young,
creative
and
human
people,
medical
students
from
over
90
countries
that
will
work
together
in
empowering
the
global
health
in
all
of
the
world
continents,"
Ancevski
said.
Even
though
Macedonian
President
Branko
Crvenkovski
refused
the
invitation
to
be
the
patron
of
this
international
meeting,
he
sent
letter
wishing
the
students
a
fruitful
work.
The
official
sessions
of
the
General
Assembly
begins
Wednesday
with
the
work
of
6
Standing
Committees,
which
will
debate
on
topic
"Medical
Response
and
Crisis
Management."
The
International
Federation
of
Medical
Students'
Associations
(IFMSA)
is
an
independent,
non-governmental
and
non-political
federation
of
medical
students'
associations
throughout
the
world.
In
2002-2003
IFMSA
had
92
members,
National
Member
Organisations
from
88
countries
on
six
continents
and
represented
over
2
million
medical
students
worldwide.
The
IFMSA
was
founded
in
May
1951
and
is
run
for
and
by
medical
students
on
a
non-profit
basis.
It
is
officially
recognised
as
a
Non
Governmental
Organization
(NGO)
within
the
United
Nations'
and
recognised
by
the
World
Health
Organization
as
the
International
Forum
for
medical
students.
It
exists
to
serve
medical
students
all
over
the
world.
IFMSA
was
established
in
the
Netherlands
as
a
charity
organization.
