Parliament passes draft law on the City of Skopje

Macedonian Information Agency (Aug 13, 2004, 6:53:45 PM (GMT+01:00)) (MIA) - Macedonian Parliament adopted Thursday a Draft Law on the City of Skopje with 67 votes "for" and one "against". All 17 deputies of non-majority communities in Macedonia also voted for the law.

Skopje will be composed of 10 municipalities, i.e. new-established local unit Butel and Saraj plus Kondovo will join the existing municipalities Aerodrom, Gazi Baba, Gjorce Petrov, Karpos, Kisela Voda, Centar, Cair and Suto Orizari.

The debate on the decentralization laws package will continue on September 2, after completion of MPs summer holiday.

The Parliament on Wednesday passed the Law on Territorial Organization of the Local Self-Government.

Sixty-one parliamentarians voted "for" the Law, while seven voted "against."

The opposition parliamentarians did not attend the voting act, which was announced by the last discussant on the text on the Draft Law, VMRO-DPMNE parliamentarian Djordji Trendafilov.

New territorial organisation foresees 80 municipalities out of which 70 on state level and 10 within the frameworks of the City of Skopje. The authority will be transferred from central to local level, while the municipalities will take over the competencies for their economic, cultural and social development.
