Workshop on use of phosphate detergents and their influence on water eco-systems

Macedonian Information Agency (Sep 10, 2004) (MIA) OHRID, Macedonia - Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning will issue an order for prohibition of production, import and use of phosphate detergents in Macedonia in November. There will be a six-month deadline for use of the current amounts of phosphate detergents, Minister Ljubomir Janev stated Thursday at the workshop on the influence of phosphate detergents on water eco-systems in Ohrid.

The annual quantity of phosphates introduced in the Ohrid Lake is half a kilogram per person, while phosphates are the largest water polluters and the basic reason for the quick aging of the Ohrid and other lakes.

The branch office of the Protect for Protection of Ohrid Lake began a media campaign for non-usage of phosphate detergents two years ago, but there is a necessity for a legal regulative, forbidding the use of phosphate detergents, which is a practice in numerous countries worldwide. bgj/ik/15:49/mia/MTnet/
