Sofia supports accession of Macedonia, Albania and Croatia into NATO

Macedonian Information Agency (Sep 27, 2004) (MIA) - Bulgaria will continue supporting NATO's open-door policy for the accession of Macedonia, Albania, and Croatia, in order to enhance regional stability, Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolai Svinarov said at Friday's press conference in Sofia.

Svinarov pledged for development of good neighbourly relations in the region, announcing total support to Macedonia's and Albania's preparations for NATO membership.

Macedonian Defence Minister Vlado Buckovski said that he was an optimist on region's future, adding that better years await the Balkans. He also presented Macedonian regional cooperation initiatives.

Albanian Defence Minister Pandeli Majko assessed that the Sofia meeting was "good news" for the region, and a start for building of new security system linked with NATO.

Majko said that different forms of cooperation for military-defence issues were agreed between the ministries and armies of Macedonia and Albania.

The defence ministers decided that the three ministries should sign an agreement on cooperation in military education, industry, technology and science.
