Peter Marke has enjoyed a successful career in the fire protection industry which included gaining international recognition for his unique approach to the complex fire protection and risk management issues within Telstra. During his career he has frequently been invited to address many of these issues by presenting papers at numerous international and local forums.

Telstra Australia

Manager Fire Safety 1976-1993

Responsibilities 

  • Formulation and monitoring of state fire protection policies relative to all facets of Telstra operations.
  • Formulation and preparation of technical publications detailing fire protection policies
  • Preparation of standard emergency procedures and disaster recovery plans for Telstra buildings
  • Fire Investigation
  • Representation on numerous regulatory committees regarding fire protection matters
  • Implementation of disaster planning and recovery initiatives for both Telstra and local government.
  • Design and development - passive and active fire protection systems

Local Government

Peter served as a councillor with the Shire of Sherbrooke (since incorporated into the Shire of Yarra Ranges) between 1988 and 1994.

  • Chairman - Municipal Emergency Planning Committee (Presided over a major review of the Municipal Emergency Management Plan)

Upwey Urban Fire Brigade - (Country Fire Authority)

Peter Marke has a long and distinguished volunteer career with Victoria's Country Fire Authority where he has gained extensive command experience at officer level since 1959 and as Captain of the Upwey Fire Brigade since 1973. This breadth of experience, coupled with Peter's outstanding commitment to the fire service and the local community contributed to his appointment to the CFA Board during May 2004.

The Dandenong Ranges are recognised internationally for their vulnerability to major bushfires. This has provided Peter with extensive experience in large scale command and resource management under disaster conditions. Peter has also served as a CFA representative on the Yarra Ranges Municipal Fire Prevention Committee for many years which, together with his Fire Brigade responsibilities, necessitated extensive involvement in the development and reviews of the Municipal Fire Prevention and Emergency management Plans.
